Map of Harderwijk, late 16th century.

Ancestral line of the VERMEER's in Sioux County, Iowa.

The oldest ancestor in male line found is called 'Derick'. He is the oldest progenitor of the VERMEER's of Harderwijk, Barneveld,Spakenburg and Sioux County, Iowa; and also of a family called BRANDSEN in Harderwijk. In the days Derick lived a surname was not common and certainly not in a rural area like the Veluwe. People were called after their father's first name. This is why Derick's son is called 'Dericks(z)' short for Derick's son. This phenomenon is called a patronimic. It is not known when exactly the VERMEER name came in practise. There's also a possibility that one of our ancestor's took over the familyname of his mother simply because his father did not have one. This is why I placed VERMEER between brackets in the generations that lived before the 17th century. Most old records do not mention the name of wifes or mothers. In such cases her name is entered as 'N.N.' which is Latin for Nomen Nescio (I Don't Know The Name or Name Unkown). The churchbooks of Harderwijk (baptisms, marriages and burials) start between 1590 and 1612. All information gathered from the period before 1600 was extracted from the so called 'Recognitionbooks'. Up until 1813 there were no notaries in many parts of the Netherlands (unlike the provinces of Holland and Friesland). To register important matters like deeds, wills and transactions people went to the local authorities: the 'schout' and 'schepenen' (sheriff and aldermen). These men made registries on folio's. Piles of folio's were bundled into books. The payment to the aldermen was called a 'recognition'. The recognitionbooks have been preserved from the year 1453 on and proved to be a very rich source for genealogical research. It also gives a glimpse of the daily life of our ancestors. Piece by piece the puzzle was solved and we were able to reconstruct a lineage that goes back into the late 14th century! The first ancestor named in these books is Marten Dericksz, who was aged 70 in 1470. From this we know that he was born about 1400 and that his father's first name was Derick who must have been born about 25 to 30 years earlier.

March 24, 1867: departure of 46 people from Hierden to New York [see: Harderwijk Chronicles 1231-1931]

In 1865 Jacob remarried to provide a mother for his sons. He married Jannetje Luchtenburg, who had an eleven year old son, Hendrik.
She agreed to marry only if he would treat her first child as one of their own.
To make a better living for his family, Jacon decided to immigrate to America. They entered at the Port of Detroit in 1867. From there they went on to Alto, Wisconsin to join friends who had come from the Netherlands earlier.
On June 13, 1868, Jacob Vermeer applied for citizenship of the United States in Fond-du-Lac County, Wisconsin. In becoming a citizen he had to renounce allegiance to King William III of the Netherlands and promise to support the Constitution of the United States and the state of Wisconsin. He was duly sworn in as a citizen on July 22, 1872.
Soon after that the family migrated to Sioux County, Iowa. At this time the family was better financial fixed than most of the earlier settlers and, therefore didn't have all the hardships to endure that most of the settlers did. Howerver, Jacob did have trouble with the wolves stealing his sheep. The family homesteaded on a farm one mile south and one mile east of Sioux Center in West Branch Township. The farm later belonged to Petertje who married Gerrit Vermeer.

The oldest 2 girls were married by then and living in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
