Henry de Vries was born one of ten children to Gerben and Sietske (Bruinsma) De Vries. His parents came from Pella in 1873 with two little girls end settled one mile east of Sioux Center where Ralph Vande Berg now lives. Here Henry was born on July 20, 1879. In August of 1887 his father bought the farm north east of Sioux Center, where Elmer and Ranae Zomermaand now live. The family first lived in a sod house until a home could be built. Henry and his brother and eight sisters grew up on this farm which has since become one of the century farms of the area.
Henry married Jannetje Vermeer on March 23,1905. She was the daughter of Hendrik and Hendrika (Te Grotenhuis) Vermeer born September 27, 1884 on a farm south east of Sioux Center. She too was of a family of ten children.
Both Henry and Jennie as she was called later had their education in country schools, going until they were needed to help work at home. When Henry and Jennie married they moved onto the farm as the parents moved to town. Those were not easy days as their first child died in 1908. In 1910 Gerben was born. The family were members of the First Reformed Church. Both Henry and Jennie lived to a ripe old age and lived on the same farm till they passed away. Henry in 1962 and Jennie in 1977.

Albert Schimmel was born on November 27, 1890 in Woudenberg, Holland. His parents were Arie and Marrigje (Van Ravenhorst) Schimmel. He had five brothers and two sisters. His father owned and operated the "Hotel Schimmel" located on the Stationsweg between Woudenberg and Scherpenzeel. The hotel is still in operation today, having celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 1985. A third generation Schimmel now owns it. When Albert was 18 years old he decided to go to America. Others from that area in Holland were also immigrating. His parents consented to let him go. He was the only member of his family to leave. He traveled with friends and came directly to Sioux County, arriving in 1909. He worked for several farmers in the Orange City area until he was married to Dena Vermeer on January 4, 1913. The marriage took place at her parents farm home one mile east and three fourths mile south of Sioux Center.
Dena's parents were Hendrik and Hendrika (Te Grotenhuis) Vermeer. She has seven brothers and two sisters. Her parents built a new home on an acreage directly north of their farm. They moved there when Albert and Dena were married, who then started farming on the home place. They lived on three different farms in the next fifteen years. Two near Sioux Center and one north west of Hospers.
They returned to the home farm south east of Sioux Center in 1938. Albert and Dena purchased the farm in 1941 and lived there until 1951. Then they moved to the home, north of the farm that her father built when they were married. This is where they retired.
